I have a slight oil leak from the cylinder heads, and was thinking about checking the torque of the cylinder head nuts. If this is all I am doing, from what I have read, I do not need the alignment tool and torque all eight bolts to 10Nm plus 150 degrees, even though the top bolts are different from the bottom bolts. Would this be the correct procedure?

NO, do not do that...the cylinder heads only have oil under the valve cover.  The oil is pushed up the pushrod to the valves and recovered via the return tubes to the crankcase.  Oil leakage is not from a loose cylinder stud.  It is most likely from a pushrod tube leak or from oil migrating from the crankcase up the cylinder stud to the area between the head and the top of the cylinder.  In both such cases the head must be removed by a trained technician who can locate the leakage.

    Cheers

The correct procedure for tightening the bolts is a one time deal. After turning the 150 degrees the bolt is stretched and if you wanted to check the torque you will stretch it more and it may snap off. That’s my experience anyway.

    Hi Larry,

    I'd do what RW says.
