914 parts manual, section 73-00-00, page 6, part #24, 66, 67.

I went to adjust the orientation of the Bent Tube Assembly #67, gently (I thought) tightened the nut #66, and the tube assembly came out of the housing. I turned the Bent Tube Assembly and it kinda/sorta tightens in place, and the nut kinda/sorta hold it there, but in reality it acts like I either stripped the threads in the Chamber Top #24, or the threads on the Bent Tube Assembly.

I've never really worked on engines before, unless you count my old '73 Bug using John Muir's How to Keep Your Volkswagon Alive 45 years ago, and I'm pretty pissed at myself, could have sworn I was barely torquing the nut, but... Oh well.

Any thoughts about how to proceed/troubleshoot? I closed up the shop as soon as it happened, I figure tomorrow I'll go in, get out my borescope and take a close look at the threads and do my "Dog looking at the tv" impersonation. Intellectually I know there's something called a Helicoil, but I've never used one and don't want to make it worse.

Thanks for listening.

So we are talking about the brass choke cable elbow on the top of the carb. I know the problem that you are describing, I have experience it myself. This elbow has to be removed to allow the throttle cable mount to be removed from the carb.

The thread in the die cast aluminium carb is not the best and to make matters worse the threaded hole has a large slot down the front reducing the thread contact area.

If your thread is stripped out to the extent that you cannot get sufficient torque on the nut to lock the elbow in place then you have a problem that needs to be fixed. There doesn't appear to be enough material to fit a helicoil so are my thoughts on how to remedy the problem:

    1. Buy a new carb top.
    2. Use some suitable Loctite to secure it, but make sure that it is weak enough to be removable.
    3. Make a new brass elbow with a longer threaded part so that you can put a nut either side of the carb mount.

Personally I like the latter since it no longer relies on the thread in the aluminium and it will be a long term solution. That said I don't know where you would go to get a suitable brass elbow onto which you would have to cut a thread. I have a carb here and the thread looks to be about 6mm with a fine pitch. I don't have any experience of bending small bore brass tube but there must be a method to achieve a smooth bend.

Thanks Kevin, Yes, it was where the tube goes into the carb top, so I'm just going to order a new carb top and bent tube assembly, I'll try to make one later when I'm not trying to get the engine running. Oh well...

69.74 for the bent tube assembly, 304.31 for the carb top. My first Aw shit! souvenirs, but at least it didn't happen while I was on the road.

That is probably the simplest solution.

I've looked carefully at the carb that I have here and the thread appears to be tapered. That being the case, you probably need to make sure that the nut is as high up the thread as possible to allow as much of the elbow's thread to engage with the thread in the carb. You really can't tighten the nut very much or the thread will fail again.

When I get to the airport I'll shoot and post some pics so others can learn. Maybe I can still salvage it, as soon as I realized something was wrong last night I stopped and went on to other things.

"69.74 for the bent tube assembly, 304.31 for the carb top."

Wow, that's fairly pricey. I suspect that the thread on the elbow is still OK. I would definitely try winding the nut further up the thread and seeing that fixes your problem before you start spending lots of money.
