I need to change the fuel filter on my 912S with one I can buy from a local auto parts store.

Does Rotax have any specific recommendations on fuel filters for the 912S ???

Thanks for any help.

    Hi Gary,

I don't believe they have any specific recommendations, but I would stay away from paper and plastic type elements and stick more along the line of the metal mesh screen type. These are usually indestructible from the fuel and usually re-usable too. There are many on the market and even some motorcycle shops. Ethanol can cause some issues with plastic filters. It softens the plastic and can cause some elements to swell or come apart.
I'm sure others will chime in here and will have not had any issues with plastic filters, but there have been test that back up some of these issues and I have personally seen plastic filters soften, bend and swell.

    Gary,

I use the metal mesh finger filters in my gas tanks and a gascolator with a fine mesh metal screen. both can be cleaned and reused indefinitely. I feel that gascolators are a must with ethanol laced fuels, especially if your plane sits for extended periods. Water absorbed by the ethanol can fall out of suspension if the fuel sits for extended periods. I've seen the same thing Roger has with the plastic filters. The clear plastic see through canisters are OK but the plastic mesh filter media inside them doesn't do well with ethanol. You can get good clear plastic filters with SS mesh and also with sintered bronze media. I'm not crazy about the sintered bronze because although its filtering qualities are great, it offers considerable resistance to fuel flow unless it's really big. Both are impervious to ethanol. The new paper media filters they make today are also much improved. The paper is made with resins that are not affected by ethanol and they are usually in metal canisters, which I prefer for safety reasons. Pleated paper also offers a huge surface area for filtering without flow resistance. I would guess that just about every car on the road today uses a paper filter and they all use ethanol.

My first choice: SS mesh, My second would be paper in metal canister. Stay away from plastic mesh media.

    Gary,

    Bill again,

Just remembered a filter I installed for a friend of mine. We bought two so we could cut one open and see what was inside and I just found the opened filter in my shop. It is a paper filter in a metal case. Approx. 2" long (not counting hose barbs) and about 1 1/4 dia. I bought them at Auto Zone for $3.95 each. They are made by Luber Finer and the Auto Zone part number is FF3404. The hose barbs, which are part of the canister, come in 1/4" and 5/16" dia. You can look up Luber Finer on the web. They make everything from huge industrial filters down to lawn mower stuff.

Gary: My goal when adding anything to my airplane is to maximize reliability. Fuel starvation is a factor in a surprisingly high percentage of GA accidents, so I wanted a fuel filter that was aerospace quality. I installed a super-mini filter from Golan Products. Aluminum body, o-ring seal and washable 10-micron stainless steel mesh filter element. A little over 50 bucks retail, but looks like it belongs on an airplane.
