purging of lubrication system

under what circumstances or service level is purging required or advised?

    Hi,

    I think anytime that the supply line from the oil tank to the oil pump is disconnected, or any parts of that supply circuit from oil tank to oil pump are worked on, where air could get into the oil supply line.

    I did a purge after installing an oil thermostat on the supply line, not really that big of a deal . Hope this helps

    Hi Colin,

    Kevin is right. Anytime the oil circuit is broken open and air has been introduced. It really is fairly easy.

    Hi Colin,

    So long as all you do is open the drain on the bottom of the tank and let the oil drain and just remove the filter and put a new one on, no. If you break any oil lines loose or rotate the prop while the oil circuit is open then yes, on the purge.

    Could I just say that if you do an oil change, by just removing the drain plug and filter, then you still need prime the system by removing the top spark plugs and turning the prop by hand until the oil pressure comes back up. Depending on the set up you have, it could take some time to get the pressure back up again, and you don't want the engine running for any length of time without oil pressure.
