The Odyssey PC680 battery made a big difference in starting my 912UL, it cranks almost 2300A on startup, and really spins my Warpdrive prop. I also put on a Tanis preheat system, and even on warm days I will hook it up while I preflight, those two changes to my engine have made start problems a nonissue! When I first got my Zenith 701, it was hard starting, but now it spins right up, it is definitely a cold blooded engine! It sure is nice to have this forum, and I look forward to learning more about this little Austrian powerhouse.

A good battery that packs a punch can make all the difference and having a little larger wire for better current flow can help too.

One thing I think some owners may not be addressing is the RPM needed to obtain a good and quick start. If the engine isn't turning over at least 350 RPM it can cause hard starting. Where or not it can cause kick back I really don't know.

I have been working on airplanes for over 50 years and I have found the best solution to a good starting engine is to have a well charged battery. For years I have been using a BatteryMinder which I connect after each flight. The batteryMinder always maintains the battery to a full charge state, then automatically switches over to a desulphiding mode which is the primary cause for battery failure. I have only beemn flying behind a Rotax 912ULS for a year and by using the BatteryMinder the enginge always starts instantly ever time I want to fly. I will say that that the BatteryMinder in the past has doubled the life of my battery. Please note that I have no affiliation with the BatteryMinder company, I just feel it is an important accessory to maintaining our batteries.

    Hi Richard,

I believe the starting rpm needed to generate enough energy to create a good starting spark is 240 and not 350 rpm

    :P
Last weekend I installed the new sprag-clutch and the new freewheel whith the later ignition point. Engine starts normal again on first attemt with no additional adjustments. Battery was OK, carbs needle and jets were OK, starter cables was OK, engine mounts were OK, spark plugs were OK.
Problem was the freewheel! There are a lot of theory that can be discarded. If you experience kickback, change to the new freewheel BEFORE THE SPRAG IS DAMAGED! There is a reason why new 912S is delivered with the new freewheel...
