What are the best procedures and type of flush needed? 300hrs 2007 new. Using 50/50 Dexcool. Thanks

    Hi Neils,

I'm sure I'm going to catch flack for one of my next comments, but it works fairly well if you are just changing the coolant. If you are only changing fluid with some fresh you don't need to flush the system with a flush solution. Depending on the plane and engine setup you may have two coolant low points. One is on the water pump housing. The lower position screw.
The second low point may be the lower radiator hose for the coolant. I will pull this off and let the coolant drain, then remove the coolant tank cap and more will drain, now the part that will catch me some odd looks. I cup my hand around the tank and blow real hard 3-4 times down through the tank. :woohoo: It will blow almost all the coolant out of the engine system. When I do the Rotax 5 year rubber hose change and pull the coolant hoses off there is just a couple of table spoons left any where. Then put the coolant line back on radiator and fill it up. No purging like the oil is necessary.

Okay now everyone that wants to jump on me for my unorthodox coolant drain can go for it. :silly:

    p.s.
If you blow through the coolant system with the hose off cover the hose and radiator outlet with a rag. If you don't like your friend have him stand there with a basin without a rag to catch what you blow out. This is a case of catcher beware if you do it without the rag cover.

    Hi Roger,

Thank you for your post of almost a year ago. Regarding removing old coolant from the coolant system you said:

"I cup my hand around the tank and blow real hard 3-4 times down through the tank. It will blow almost all the coolant out of the engine system."

Which radiator hose is removed? Do you remove the lower radiator hose from the water pump housing, or the radiator?

Also, is it necessary to remove the Lower position Screw in the water Pump Housing?

    Thanks a lot!

    Hi Ron,

Some of the answer depends on the engine mount and wether you can access the water pump drain screw. Many times I can't. So I remove the lowest hose on the coolant system and drain by gravity. Then I cup my hand over the coolant tank and blow hard 3-4 times. Make sure you have a rag over the hose end you have pulled off or you'll make a mess. It usually is the lower coolant hose on the radiator. If you can access the low point bleed on the pump it can drain there too. The other way I do it seems to get more out of all the crevisis and the radiator much faster.
