Good afternoon,

Does changing the oil, filter and examining the magnetic chip plug without taking the Rotax 16 hour course violate the engine warrantee or cause problems if entered in the engine log book?

Is there a subsequent requirement from Rotax which negates what you can do on the manufacturers preventive maintenance list?

I have the experience of building and flying a previous aircraft. Is that taken in consideration as maintenance know-how?

Thanks,
Rich

    Hi Rich,

The short answer is no if done correctly. If you do it wrong then yes. If you live in the US and have an SLSA then you are allowed to do what is considered preventative maint. as spelled out in the FAR's. If you live in the US and are not a rated mechanic like an A&P or an LSRM-A you can not do other maint. outside the preventative maint or inspections. Make sure you do a good job of documentation and don't just use the one liner logbook entry like some. Make the logbook entry complete and with some detail and legible.

I would highly recommend if you have a Rotax engine and you have some mechanical experience to attend the 2 day Rotax Class. It has helped me keep my engine inspected and found a few issue that could be resolved easily that may have caused serious issues if left unchecked. I pull my cowling off at least once a month to snoop around and I like knowing how everything is hooked and functions mechanically.

    Hi Rich,

Have you had any Rotax training from an authorized Rotax school or at least someone trained by Rotax?

    Hello Roger,

No, not yet. Am awaiting Carol Carpenter to schedule classes here near north east,PA.
Sebring is a real trip for me, so I'll have to wait for something closer.

I went over part 43 of the FAR/AIM today, and have entered in the engine log more precise documentation, stating the latest manual, section, page and procedures accomplished. Namely, oil and filter change, magnetic plug removal, inspection and replacement along with oil filter inspection.

Thank you for the suggestion of including more documentation than just stating oil, filter and mag plug inspection.

    Roger,

    My last post was truncated.

Should have included manual, section, page and procedure accomplished.
