Running engine without a prop fitted

Hi All

I was asked the question today why you shouldn't run the engine without a prop fitted.

The only answer I could give is that it could very easily overspeed if revved.

Does anybody have any other reasons that could cause problems.

Hi Mark,

That's pretty much it. It has no load and could easily run away with rpm and over speed before you could even blink.

Mark, the prop is the equivalent of the flywheel. Without it the engine will not run smoothly and as Roger has said, can over rev.

Thanks for that, just as I thought. If you leave the throttle alone so it stays at tick over then there is no problem.
