    Hi Jeff,
How many hours on the engine and what oil and fuel are you using?
The rings move when running. Has this been a problem for a while or new with an hour or two run time.

Engine gas 560 hrs. Before I bought it 100ll was used. It runs great no apparent smoke but black on landing gear. Great compressions. I think I have same gummed up oil rings. The original post in this topic describes my problem exactly. I am going to pull a suspect cylinder and check it out.

If you're burning oil it should show up in the exhaust and on the plugs. It may show up on the cylinder heads with deposits.

Just to be on the safe side, if your are talking "oil ring" that's item no 14 (IPC, dated Jan 2017, page 14 and 15, section 72-20-00), right?

A ring wash (squeezing a solvent mixture through the rings) will usually clean them out without having to remove them.

I had a similar problem a few years ago with excessive oil consumption. Turns out the oil return hose from the sump to the oil tank was crimped. Checking the crankcase pressure (method found in installation manual) exposed the problem. Once the hose was replaced, all was well.
