I had a set of rings that had grooves worn in the back from the springs. They then acted like little rachets preventing the rings from taking up the wear so oil consumption increased. No amount of cleaning would have fixed them so they had to be replaced. Getting at the rings is not too difficult if you have good access to the sides of your engine.

Hi Kevin, how much disassembly does it take? Do heads, cylinders and pistons need to be taken off?

IThe job looks worse that it is, you need to drain the coolant so that you can remove the hoses and then it is just a case of following the heavy maintenance manual. Putting the pistons back into the cylinders can be a fiddle whilst compressing the rings. Be careful not to over-tighten the cylinder mounting studs into the crankcase. Refer to the torque in the manual.

I am at a loss as to suggest the best method of bedding in the new rings. I am not sure what is done with a new engine in the factory but when motorcycle engines are rebuilt they suggest using a mineral oil and not a synthetic and run the engine hard to force the rings against the walls of the cylinder to bed them in. If you end up glazing the cylinders that it may never bed in and you will have ongoing oil consumption issues.

I would be keen to hear from anyone who has a tried and tested method of bedding in new rings that results in a quick transistion to low oil consumption. Roger, Rob, any thoughts?

No mineral oil or break-in period for the 9-series engines. Just do a run-up, check for leaks and fly!

Rob, any idea of how long it should take for oil consumption to stabilise?
