My neighbor decided to clean his engine with Stoddard solvent and a cyphon sprayer. This is the usual way to clean Lycoming and Continental engines. Several days later he tried to start the engine and it would not start. The only thing done to the engine since it was running fine was the engine washdown with Stoddard.

It did not produce any spark at all and never even tried to start. We opened all the module connectors and all looked clean. We reconnected all the connectors and still no fire. I had a spare module and we installed that and the engine started and ran fine on both/either of the modules now. Next we reinstalled his original module. It ran fine now with both of his original modules. We concluded that all the unconnecting and reconnecting of the connectors must have wiped them clean.

So, now what is the best procedure and product to clean the connectors? Also, if stoddard solvent will contaminate the connectors what about flying in rain? Any ideas about this will be greatly appreciated.

His engine is a 912ULS 2007 model with about 600 hours on it.

    Lynn,

I use electrical contact cleaner in a spray can which I get at Radio Shack. Probably any auto supply store has the same thing. It won't harm the plastic parts of the connectors and does a pretty good job on the pins. Follow up with a good coating of dielectric grease on the metal pins, Also available at any auto supply store, and you have a good weatherproof connection. Also helps to plug and unplug them several times before applying the grease.

    Hi Lynn,

Stoddard solvent is kind of old school and we aren't running Cont. or Lycoming engine. There are much better grease and oil cleaning agents now days compared to yesteryear.
If you read enough about this solvent you may want to discontinue its use. It has eco and human health side effects. The solvent is a petroleum product and will leave behind residue. It may have been this residual that got places you didn't want it to go. Plus petroleum type chemicals can be hard on certain rubber and adhesive type parts. Remember to that the back of the engine around all the electrical is open and subjected to these solvents and residues and you won't be able to rinse that solvent off.
When I I'm forced to do a major verses spot clean a Rotax engine I use a water based cleaner. The best I have found is a product called "Oil Eater". It is water based, but does a killer job on grease and oil. Then I always follow any cleaning product by a fresh water rinse. Can't do that very well with petroleum products. The fresh water is the least problematic of other chemicals. After the rinse I start the engine right away and let it run around 2200-2400 rpm for 20 minutes or more to get everything dry with engine heat. Never let any cleaning agents or water just sit inside any openings on the engine.

    p.s.
When I do clean I try very hard to spray the cleaner only on the parts I need clean and try really hard never to directly spray electrical parts and connections.

    Roger,

Thanks for the quick reply. I am truly surprised about using a water based cleaner and rinsing with water. It just seems strange to use water on an engine. I will try to find a water based cleaner to use.

Obviously the connectors at the ignition modules must have gotten contaminated. What should I use to clean them and should I use it only on the outside or clean the inside of the plugs also?

    Thanks --- Lynn Coltharp

    lynn,

The spray I mentioned works especially well inside the connectors. Dries in seconds and leaves no residue. Its designed just for this type of cleaning.

The CRC company makes some good electrical contact cleaner in a spray can.
Another good way is to use a piece a scotchbrite pad on the metal connector.
