I am nearing the point where I will be initially PURGING the oil system on my new RV-12 (912ULS). The way the RV-12 engine compartment and oil hoses are configured, the end of the oil hose that is disconnected and allowed to drain during the PURGE is situated above the oil tank and engine crankcase. Since the spark plugs are removed during the PURGE, there will be no crankcase pressure to force the oil up and out of this elevated hose. As a result, the oil will pool in the bottom of the crankcase during the PURGE. Is this a problem?

My plan is to do the PURGE, reinstall the spark plugs, reconnect the oil hose, and then do the BURP thing to push the oil pooled in the bottom of the crankcase up and back into the oil tank. Is this a reasonable approach?

Many thanks for your input!

ps -- I don't want to disconnect the oil hose at the bottom of the crankcase since it is difficult to access it there.

    Hi David,

Your hose being higher won't be an issue. The oil tank in hose usually runs uphill from the bottom of the engine anyway. Some are just higher than others. The oil is pushed through the system with the air pressure you have hooked up which replaces the crankcase pressure when the plugs are out. I just take another hose and slip it over the tank "in" fitting and drop it down into a pan. That way it doesn't make a mess. Any oil in the oil hose after your done is no big deal. Do the purge like they show it here on the video. I do a little extra just to make sure I have all the air out and don't take any chances with a brand new engine. With the air pressure on and your ready to rotate the prop I do it with a little speed 75 times, then after I get off my oxygen , I rotate again 75 turns and then one more time 75 turns. So I have done a good many rotations. I don't believe all are necessary, but at the cost of leaving air in the system and trashing something I figure the extra turns are worth the few extra minutes of my time. Then I don't have to worry. When I turn it with a little speed I can usually see 50-55 psi in oil pressure on the instrument panel. Then check the rocker arms for softness as they do in the video.

Many thanks for the info. If one is rotating the prop with such alacrity, why not just use the starter for a bit with the mags OFF?

You should do it by hand and not beat up your starter. That's a lot of turning just to leave the starter turn. Easier on engine components.

If your over 60 years old make sure oxygen is standing by.

I can't seem to find the video. Can you send a link?
