I would appreciate any insight into this anyone can provide.

Over an average 10 second period my EMS Dynon 120 shows amperage varying from -2 to +7amps. why the variation? Voltage was steady at 13.2V. My airport A & P, admittedly not well versed in Rotas ( there are only two CTLS's in Hawaii ), and he doesn't know....

I initially tried pulling each circuit breaker, one by one, seeing if I could understand which device might be creating this. Same result.

Then, I turned everything off, and used a amp cramp on the battery wire and it indicated about 2.5 amps at idle, up to 4.5+/- at higher rpms, very steady.

So, this inferred the voltage regulator / alternator was working fine...?

Is this variability in amperage ( versus a relatively steady reading on the EMS Voltage ) a "normal" condition--for reasons not understood, or is there a bigger problem I need to track down and eliminate...???

    Hi Scott,

There is nothing wrong with your charging system.
This is very normal with the Dynon D120 and the Rotax. It is where the Dynon samples the amperage at the shunt. Everyone I know bounces between -4 to +10. Dynon just says the Rotax is a noisy engine. I have been working a little with them on this for several months and it is a complicated programming fix that may not be solved for a while. It is normal so just consider it so and use it as a guide. If the ammeter goes low and stays there or goes real high and stays there then worry. There is no fix for it unless you just want to turn it off so you can't see it.
