:: Sudden Engine stop at full RPM ::

A friend of mine owns an Experimental Aircraft with a 912 UL engine who was giving a ground run a few days back and at full RPM the engine stopped suddenly. He checked the Oil it was good and in required quantity. The coolant was also found to be in the required quantity. As per him the engine was at about 5200 rpm and everything was in green.

Any guess guys on what could have happened?

Hi , my first thought is fuel system problem, second I'm thinking electrical .

is this a newly built plane ? how many hrs on engine ? any recent maintenance ?

nopes its about 9 to 10 years old, there was no maintenance conducted since last annual inspection, which happened a few months ago. It was flying ok since then.

If it slowed and or coughed and gagged to a stop then it was probably fuel related. If it stooped like you snapped your fingers or turned the key off, electrical.

Dear Friends,

The engine stopped suddenly, during takeoff. the Crankshaft is jam.. doesnt move a millimeter on either side.

It looks that you will be pulling the gearbox and the engine. No way to tell without some investigation. You won't know until you start to rule some things out. I would start on the outward ends (gearbox and flywheel areas) and work my way inward. Could be a serious detonation in a cylinder? You'll need to pull heads.

If you find the cause make sure there was no collateral damage.
