Hi I have a savannah with a 912uls engine and have the same problem with standard exhaust since rotax increased the length of the oil filter.

Thank you said by: Al C

I got a few more reports of this on other forums. Bet it' s'more common than is obvious,. That since it's not a show stopper or an obvious safety danger.. More of a pain in the ass with a relatively easy obvious , if kludgy , work around, most people just live with it.
The irony is that I bet if it was an aftermarket filter maker selling this slightly longer filter I'd not be surprised Rotax would be all over it issuing scary warnings and saying use of that filter would void your warrenty.

Unless you have a 914 or a 912iS Rotax did not make or design your exhaust system. Every other exhaust system is made by the builder / OEM from their own components or Rotax bits and pieces. The only completely assembled exhaust systems made by Rotax (914 and 912iS) have no problem with oil filter clearance.
It was only 3.5mm (0.14") increase in oil filter length. It was needed to make a better filter.
You are correct Al; using an aftermarket filter will void your warranty, if you were a aircraft engine manufacture would you pay for for warranty out of your pocket if it had after market parts on it?

".....You are correct Al; using an aftermarket filter will void your warranty, if you were a aircraft engine manufacture would you pay for warranty out of your pocket if it had after market parts on it? ....."

Well, if I were a manufacturer who didn't care much about how my customer support culture and reputation was perceived I would not want to pay for ANY repairs and would use whatever legal or practical methods I could to weasel out of or ignore any issues users of my product ran into.... even if they were obviously or partly caused by my oversights or errors. Except to try to cover my ass by issuing bulletins so I could say “I told you so.”

As for after market parts: No, even if ethical and consumer friendly I would not want to pay for repairs CAUSED by aftermarket parts.
But, There's a big difference between that and "I see you have an aftermarket part on your engine, so I'm completely leaving you blowing in the wind regardless of what your problem is."
And in general using a non-OEM oil filter, even one of the worst ones, is unlikely to actually cause problems, let alone significant ones that would show up in the short Rotax standard one year warrenty.

I was going to respond further here, but realized my reply was turning into a rambling rant about my unfattering perceptions of Rotax customer support, better, if posted at all, to be under it’s own topic, and clearly NOT under 4-stroke technical stuff.

So FWIW, if you want to see, or respond to this or my full rant, out of courtesy to those who expect THIS section to be technical material, please go to --
