Rob, is that a resistor across the terminals of the tacho pickup on the left of your picture? Is it soldered in place or are the wires just wedged in there?

yes, it is a resistor. its just pinched in place by the wires. It stops the tach from jumping. Remember this is not an engine, it is a tester.

check the ground wires first. Each individual stator ignition coil wire (called the RED wire) is continuous from the module connection, to the coil, all the winding and out to the ring terminal that is grounded to the stator iron core.
You can remove the screws that ground the ring terminal (see attached) and clean the surface of any corrosion and replace the screw and washer. Use DC-4 to insulate and protect the terminal and screw/washer connection. At the same time measure the resistance again with the ohmmeter leads connected directly to the ring terminal and the pin at the module end. This will eliminate any false readings. Try wiggling the wire with the ohmmeter connected to find any breaks inside the sheath.
    Hopefully your stator is OK.

I checked my engine on the weekend... I can't get a really good look due to space constraints, but I seem to have a "different" setup ... perhaps the old style engine?... I don't see the terminal wires attaching to the screws shown in your picture... am I still to use the same procedure?

    Thx.

it should be the same, I see the newer engines have the stator mounting screws with the ring terminals at more around 21:00 & 18:00 oclock position.

    So an update...

... it did turn out to be a damaged coil... my stator must be a very older model as all the coils are soldered to the stator plates, i.e. no ring terminals are present.

something fell in and got lodged between the stator and the rotating magnet... tore one of the wires on one of the coils...

... not sure what happened here... I am always very careful not to drop and loose things into the engine compartment...

    Thanks for all your help.
