This may be my first post so go easy on me! :) I think I have a good understanding of the rotax 912 charging and ignition system but I would like some reassurance! Back story is I have a 601 HD with an early rotax 912 in it. Picked it up last fall. I have an A&P and am getting back into aircraft now that I can afford to play the game! I have not worked in the field for almost 20 years!
Now to my issue! looking at rotax prints 13.4.11 page 102 103 it looks like my stater or magnetic ignition generator only powers the ignition system and my external automotive style alternator powers the rest of my 12v electrical system! This is correct? I am asking because my aircraft has two batteries. A main and a little security type second that really now runs nothing being I removed the oil cooler fan that was hooked up to it. I would like to remove the second battery being it is in the way of my nose gear strut and adds weight to the firewall! Any info would be helpful because my next step it to start tracing all the wiring out behind the instrument panel!

there should be a 20amp alternator on the back end of the crankshaft, near the ignition rotor/stator. the aux generator is an extra/option that may be powering one of your batteries. the aux generator probably has more output than the stock rotax generator, and it may be charging the larger battery.

The standard configuration in the rear of the engine powers the engine and other electrical equipment. If you have the external generator run by a belt up by the prop that too does the same. You should not be using both. I personally don't see a reason that the second battery could be removed. Maybe someone else here has more insight.
