    Kevin,
Yes, mine is very quiet, but aren’t all 912s? Many people comment on how quiet my plane is. However, are you certain about you not having an inner tube? My exhaust gases enter from the four tubes into the main outside chamber of the muffler. At the center of the chamber is another tube running side to side with holes in them (as perhaps you can see from the picture). The exhaust must enter this inner tube to find their way out to the exit pipe; that is, at least before the tube broke on both sides. Makes me question why it broke. As sturdy a metal as the tube appears, it is amazing to me it broke at all. I wouldn’t think it would be flexing. I would need to weld both sides to repair it – and indeed this is probably what I will pursue. On the other hand, perhaps I could simply remove the tube and have an open chamber muffler. I never would have suspected my muffler to be anything but an open can.

I may start a separate thread to ask muffler questions, like ‘is the inside empty?’ and ‘are their consequences for gutting the inside of the muffler?’.

Thanks for helping with picture posting as well. I probably had too big file sizes. I am now trying with 400k files that total less than 900k. I see them below, but once I click submit, will they still be there.

Sorry to report that your pictures have still not appeared. You can attach jpg, jpeg, gif or png files. I used Firefox as the browser and it seems to work OK.

I've had a closer look at my muffler and I think that it is actually the same as yours with a tube down the middle. I don't know how it is fixed in place.

Is it worth posting on the Rans forum or speak to a Rans dealer?

    Kevin,

From your picture, the outside looks like mine. And yes, would be worth posting on Rans Forum as well. I may call Rans parts to talk to them as they have been helpful in the past. I wonder if all Rotax mufflers have some baffle. In addition to minor sound deadening, perhaps it is also a spark arrestor.

I've repeatedly tried to post .jpg pictures. This time I will try to post only one picture of the inside of the muffler, a 400k picture. I am using the latest version of Firefox. I seem to recall that until we reach a certain posting status, we might be prohibited from posting any attachment. Not sure where I read that. Strange because I can see the picture before submitting. I've tried dropping and dragging as well as browsing. And each time the .jpg picture shows up. This time I will try to change the name to the number 1.jpg and the other to Rans.jpg to see if this helps.

    Thanks again,
    Dennis
