Hi

I am about to purchase an Aeroprakt A22LS Foxbat Kelpie. Comes with the 100 hp Rotax and can be optioned with fuel injection. My question is what engine choice to make and what options to get. My main priority is to reduce pilot workload and have high reliability and safety. Having high performance and/or low fuel consumption is not important. Having to use carb heat is an anathema to me (!#$@ it's 2017 $!@#$). The operating conditions will be low humidity and temps -2 to 45 C, but it could move anywhere in Australia, which includes tropics I suppose in the future. I expect it will be VH registered but will have glass cockpit so should not need a vacuum pump, but I might just be ignorant about that.

I expect I will get the model without manual carburetor heat. Fuel injection does not seem to be worth it if it weighs 7kg more, and delivers about 7% increase in fuel economy (just carry 7kg fuel in a jerry can). But if it was a 30% increase in fuel economy then that *might* be different.

Do I need a bigger oil radiator? Coolant overflow bottle? What about these thermostats people keep adding?

Thanks. And Thanks for reading the long post.

The Rotax recommended oil cooler size should be fine. Many folks, including myself, installed an oil thermostat and glad I did; it noticeably speeds up warm-up time in cold weather. Also, yes you will definitely need a coolant overflow bottle.

If you are looking for Reduced workload and reliability, The Fuel Injected (912is) is the choice.

    No Carb Sync issues.
    No Sinking Carb Float issues.
    No Mixture issues.
    No Carb Icing possibility.
    No Choke Setttings. (No Choke!)

You just turn the key and go.
If you are old enough to remember owning a car with a carburetor,
you know why you will never want to go back.

Compare the 912/914 section of the forum against the 912is section.
Look at the nature of the questions.
The 912is section is not very exciting. (And 9 times smaller.)
    Boring is good!

Thank you for the reply, Bill. I don't mind more workload before and between flights - I should have clarified that. Especially not if the injected engine is $10 000 more expensive. It looks like the engine without manual carby heat would be good, with no higher workload, so long as you don't get ice!

The engine price difference between the 912ULS and the 912is is smaller than it appears.
The list prices are $17,000 vs $21,000.
But the 912is includes the $1600 engine mount that the ULS does not.
    Making the difference only $2400.

The 912is almost requires a glass gauge panel.
There are no places to attach steam gauges.
    That could add another $4000.
But if you are already planning to use one, the point is moot.

We are talking Fuel injected, Not a Turbo. That would add your $10,000

I could not find anywhere on the Foxbat site that showed that anything other than the ULS was an option. ???

Hi. The iS is not on the options list, but I have seen photos of Foxbats with them. If the iS is only $2400 more, and I was getting glass anyway, then that would be the way to go, probs. Thanks!
