I sync at 3300-3500 for the high rpm and down around 1650-1800 for the idle rpm depending on the plane and the customer. I always tell them DO NOT just sit there and idle at low rpm. Plus if you get it lower there is a chance the engine could die on final and this has happened. I almost always better to better safe than sorry. I have found too many times just syncing at 2500 like the book says that the gauge needles tend to split again as the rpms are increased. I've never had that issue after syncing at the higher rpms.
Some people and even service centers may have their own preferences. I prefer tried and true coupled with best practices.
