The MM says to torque a new spark plug (with heat compound) into a cold engine.  That's clear, and it's easy during maintenance downtime, but what about in the field where you're troubleshooting rough running engine, and probably putting the same spark plug right back where it came from a minute ago, with the same washer, and probably still warm/hot?  What are the realistic precautions needed in this scenario?

I would note the alignment of the text on the plug and tighten it to approximately the same point. Obviously if it starts feeling really tight I would stop ?. You can always retorque it later when the engine has cooled. If you have a very lose plug it can result in a misfire, if you overtighten it you can damage the thread in the head and that is really bad.
