Default Exceeded recommended RPM with cold oil

In the POH for the legacy RV-12 the POH mentions a minimum oil temp of 120 degrees along with a max RPM.

Example : “Taxi RPM – 1800–2500 RPM until oil temp reaches
120° F (50° C)”

Why is this? What specific damage can occur?

Why? : A buddy of mine was taxiing with oil temp around 100 degrees and got bogged down in grass…He knew better, but advanced the throttle well beyond the RPM recommendation. He says the engine now makes unpleasant noises he’s never heard before, and is running rough. It has around 570 hours on it.

What could have been compromised? (We fear big $$$)

Who could help him diagnose it? (We need a Rotax expert. )

Thanks

Until the oil is sufficiently warmed up it will be more viscous, which can lead to the oil pressure going above maximums if that rev limit is exceeded.  High oil pressure can lead to oil being forced past the oil filter, assuming the filter's bypass is working properly.  Either way it's not a "good thing".

The oil temp is a good basic indicator that engine metals, tolerances and fluids have achieved their specs for higher rpm operation.

    Tim,

all said is correct for sure.
However, I doubt that a single occasion with revs above recommendation (not full throttle?!) with the oil not being ice cold (delta ~20 degrees) for a rather short period of time (10 sec, 20 sec, 30 sec?!) does any harm. Writing this am am having a guy at our airfield in mind who rarely cares about min oil  temps and usually takes off with 100 degrees (full loud of course). He is a heavy user and his 912 has approx 3500 hrs.

Hope you can identify the cause for the unheard noise and fix it.

    Regards

    Peter

I suspect only an engineer or two at Rotax could answer your question, I certainly can’t, but I will at least offer this. Is there an inspection requirement for this listed in any Rotax 912 maintenance manual or Service Bulletin? If not, then obviously don’t do it as there must be some damage that could eventually be done if continuously ignored but don’t worry about an occasional transgression. Agree with Peter, it’s likely not related.  Can you clarify “unpleasant noises” and expand upon “running rough”? Could something in the tall grass have dislodged the muffler or damage the exhaust? Did he have a prop strike? Does it run rough at idle or at full throttle or both? What about when running on one ignition circuit or both? etc.
