912 ULS oil weep under starter motor

My 912 is weeping a small amount of oil from the crank case seam under the starter.

I Confirmed the location by using UV dye.

I have checked the torque on the local bolts and starter.

Any ideas?

If I understand you correctly, the oil is coming from between the mating surfaces of the crank case and the ignition housing?

This usually due to the sealant between the crank case and the ignition housing not able to properly cure or adhere during ignition housing installation.

At installation of the ignition housing, it is important to use the correct sealant (Loctite 5910, 574 or 518) and for both the ignition housing and crank case sealing faces to be clean and oil free. Any oil, grease or even a fingerprint can cause the sealant to not adhere properly to the metal surfaces and potentially cause a leak at some point in time.

It is also very important to properly torque the ignition housing into place at installation. Looking at the ignition housing itself, there are 7 screws which attach the housing to the crank case (indicated in yellow in the picture below). The lower lobe of the ignition housing at the water pump and the lobe at the starter location are only held (and torqued) in place by the water pump housing and the starter motor respectively (indicated in red in the picture below).

When installing the ignition housing, the water pump housing and the starter must be installed immediately, and considered part of the "torquing" procedure of the ignition housing. If the water pump housing or starter is not installed and torqued into place right away, the sealant between the ignition housing and the crank case may cure in place before being properly dispersed and may eventually lead to an oil leak.

If your oil is indeed leaking from between the crank case and the ignition housing, the only proper fix is to have the ignition housing removed and re-sealed.

My engine has never been apart. If the leak is from poor sealing it came from the factory that way.

From the picture it looks more like a sweat and not much of a leak. I would say cleanM it and watch it.

If all it is a tiny non dripping weep where it only discolors the metal I wouldn't worry about this and there is a good chance this is all it will be and it won't drip oil. It can be just an inspection item or look see when you happen to pull the cowl off. Wipe it off and keep an eye on it.
