Re-assembling the oil pump..  79-00-00 Page 13.

When sliding the oil seal onto the oil pump shaft,  there is a feather key groove in the shaft that should be covered with "insulating tape".   I presume so that the groove doesn't knick the oil seal as it slides past it.  What exactly is "insulating tape" and is it actually necessary, or just a best practice?

    Hi Robert

The injected engines have a seal on the oil pump shaft and the gears are driven by a keyway (feather key groove).  They want you to cover the edges of the groove with a very thin "insulating tape" to protect it.  Think shinny electrical tape for wire wrap.  One small ½ wrap to protect the groove and remove after it is pushed back into place.  The seal lips should have some lithium grease on them before you insert the shaft.

    Cheers
