I am also not a big fan of the "back-up battery" term. I think Aux power would be better. the purpose of the switch is to provide 12v and a ground to the fuel pumps and ECU in case of emergency, or for ground maintenance: when you don't want to run the engine but still want to power everything up.

Geoffry Question: Will a simple three position ignition key switch coupled with a relay perform the same function? An ignition switch with a starter lockout function costs less than a hundred dollars.
Answer: as long as you are not powering up the start-power at the same instant as the starter motor. The ECU needs boot time before the starter is engaged. Also be careful your relay does not violate the separate ground concept. Test: with the engine running there should be no connection between regulator A and B. Check with an ohmmeter on the regulator housings as shown in the installation manual.

Sorry Roger; I don't care if CT, Pipistrel, or other OEMs are using a rotary switch for the lanes, its a bad idea for this engine. You simply cannot beat the simple toggle switch for this function.

I found the Hella product and I think is:
    http://www.hella.co.nz/3-258-439/product/Ignition-and-Starter-Switch---22mm-Shaft
It don't have the pre-heat position and I think it is no good.
The Hella product with pre-heat position is:
    http://www.hella.co.nz/3-258-436/product/Diesel-Pre-Heating-Starter-Switch
but I don't understand from wiring diagram if when is in starter position the pre-heating is on.

Please take a look at the wire diagram which is attached and let me know what you think about.

I changed COBO 14.136.000 in COBO 14.173.000 due the size.

    Hi Rob,

I don't think their system (FD or the other) is better and I know Rotax likes the individual toggle switches. I was just pointing out that some have put the rotary switches in successfully. I think their was a reason Rotax choose the individual switches and would be better to stick with that.

My Kitfox SS7 uses a momentary toggle switch for start power, which is located just to the left of the throttle. The start switch is a momentary push button located lower left on the instrument panel.
So starting is the same basic motions as starting most GA aircraft. Right hand on throttle with
thumb under start switch and left index finger on start button. Engine starts, release both switches and adjust throttle.
