Hi

I am just finishing off my Sling 2, with Rotax 912is Sport and Garmin G3X touch panel. I have chosen not to have a back-up battery, as there is more than enough redundancy going on for my needs.

I have a master switch and a separate avionics master switch - primarily so I could keep the G3X, transponder, servos and radio off when I start the engine.

I am interested to know if anyone (with any modern EFIS - Dynon, MGL, G3X etc) starts their engine with the EFIS on (and running off the main battery, not a backup battery). Does your EFIS reboot or does it stay on during startup? (I understand there is plenty of protection built into the Garmin devices, however would be nice to view instant oil pressure on startup).

Thanks,
Ian

    Hi Ian,

If you are using the Dynon Skyview then yes the EFIS can be on and no it will not reboot. Flight Design has theirs this way and so do a few others.

I have a 912iS sport with an Advanced 5600 EFIS. The 5600 is wired to come on when the master switch is activated. Then one fuel pump
on, EFIS to engine page, hold start power switch on, lane A and B on, check fuel pressure above 41 PSI and battery above 12 volts, press starter switch and engine is running. I have operated the aircraft for two years now and have seen no problem with starting with EFIS on
during engine cranking. The master relay draws about 1.5 amp and the 5600 about 3 amp. The fuel pump could be up to 10 amps. The start sequence takes about 10 seconds. After engine is running the B alt usually comes on because the throttle setting for start generally
takes the RPM above the 2500 RPM required for B alt activation.

    Hi Ian,
I have a Sting S4 with G3X touch and IS Sport engine. I turn the avionics ON before engine start. Only single battery. I have no problems, no reboots etc. This way I can see oil pressure etc as soon as the engine starts. 220 hrs so far.

! do intend to upgrade my battery to one that meets the IS Sport recommendation (16 AH 350 CCA) the battery it came with is only 11 AH and 160 CCA.

    Regards

    Hi Ian,
I am also using a G3X Touch in my 912iS powered Zenith CH750. I have not yet flown but have started it a few times. I did not put an avionics switch in it, so the G3X is on anytime the master is on. I have one battery (an EarthX LiFePo4) and the G3X does not reboot. I was assured by both Christer at SteinAir and one of the G3Xperts that it was not necessary to leave the EFIS off until after the start and that installing an avionics switch was unnecessary.
Off topic question for Ian and Glenn: My fuel pressure is reading 39 or 40 psi when my engine is running which is a little low. Have either of you experienced this? My buddy has the same set up in his flying 912iS/CH750 with a legacy G3X and his also runs a couple psi lower than spec.

    Hi Joe,
my yellow bar comes on at below 2.5 bar (36.5 psi) and sometimes comes on when descending under low power at idle so probably getting down to 35 PSI. It has done this from new and does not seem to be a problem. Perhaps the fuel pressure regulator is a little low. I would be interested in others experience too
