We use the "Thermostasis 205F" and love it. the oil temp is always at 210F the whole flight, no matter what the OAT.

I've now heard that some people tape over the coils to keep oil temps up during the cold season. Is this really necessary?

    Hi Jim,

You should strive to keep oil temps over 200F. If you always run down around 185F for example then you can't burn off contaminates very well. Many of us that don't have thermostats use a piece of 2" wide aluminum tape across the oil cooler and coolant radiator to keep temps above 200F. It works very well and cost is cheap. When hotter weather comes just pull it off. Do not use Ducttape because the glue will come off on everything. Just use the aluminum tape and wrap it around the edges of the coolers. Takes 2 minutes. This just reduces some of the cold air flow and allows the engine to run in a preferable temp range. Most engines are designed to operate on a continuous basis between certain temps and rpms.
