Just to verify the Installation Manual, is it absolutely mandatory to isolate the starter relay from any electrical contact with the airframe ground?
Unlike the other component that requires isolation, the starter relay does not have insulating features.
I just want to be sure that I can't just bolt the relay to a metal (airframe grounded) firewall.
Thanks.

Yes, it is necessary to isolate it. I don't know the reason why. I used a small piece of. quarter inch thick nylon that has countersunk bolts from the back to do it.

Thanks for the reply. According to the manuals the grounds (EMS and airframe) are connected upon engine start and back up battery activation. Also, it seems like there would not be a common connection between Reg A and Reg B even if the starter relay is grounded to the airframe. That test seems to be the major factor to determine proper connection. The grounds to Reg B are all switched by either start power or battery back-up.
I can't seem to find any reference to protecting the relay in the Line or Heavy Manuals. You would think if it was so important there would be a note in those manuals. Maybe I am just not finding it.
    Thanks again.

It is mentioned in the Installation Manual 80-00-00, page 5

"NOTE: Starter relay must be installed isolated from airframe ground."

I guess the maintenance manuals assume a correct installation, and also assume that the techs are going to be careful enough not to take things apart without noting how they should go back together? But probably the maintenance manuals do not caution about isolation as there is no procedure in either manual for removing the starter relay...

The Kitfox fire wall forward kit comes with a nylon insulator assembly which they fabricate at the factory. I expect they would be
pleased to sell them to any 912iS owners.
