Today I checked again with the simulator, but now with a running engine. Immediately after startup both lane lights started blinking again. With the "generator failure" error.
Any tips/suggestions?

YES! Vans support told me that sometimes parts in the fuse box are "loose". Yesterday I opened the fuse box and to my surprise found a half way detached fuse in the fuse box (the yellow 20 A one). The one leg of the fuse had a tiny burn mark where it intermittantly connected. That might explain the on and off of the problem.
I also got the maintenance port working with the dongle. So I am happy and looking forward to fly again, after a few frustrating weeks.
