My 915iS with 90 hrs TSN suddenly became hard to start smoothly but only on the first time. It ignites right away, but runs very rough, and requires significant throttle increase to keep running. It smooths out after about ten seconds and runs clean and smooth thereafter. If I do a shut down after smooth running, then the next start is fast and smooth. Startup is very similar to a radial engine where one needs to keep hitting the fuel primer to keep it running until all cylinders are firing smooth. I found a couple spark plugs were darker than all others, and minor lead deposits. I always use 94 UL, with no ethanol. A brass wire brush spark plug cleaning had no effect.

If a couple hours have elapsed, then the first cold start will repeat the initial roughness. Rough running will only achieve about 700 RPM until it runs smoothly.

Suggestions where to look?

I’ve been told that sometimes it can get into a sub-idle condition, in which case it’s best to just kill the lanes and try again, rather than trying to power out of it. That said, I can usually avoids that condition by using the start procedure outlined in the Operators Manual; priming first, setting the throttle per the chart in the OM for the ambient temp, starting with only one pump, etc.

Thanks Mike. The second start always worked fine, perhaps a Testament to your "shut down and restart" suggestion. I had a suggestion to use both fuel pumps. I did this today while flying six EAA Young Eagles. Evert start was fine.

    Ok, so what has changed?

I stumbled on this thread a while back because I was having the same problem as Rob. I bought the engine new and never had a problem for a month, then the rough starts started happening more frequently, always taking anywhere from 5-10 seconds to smooth out.

I'm now posting because I fixed the problem, at least for my engine. I made one change to my start procedure... the timing of setting throttle position. Prior to the change, I would turn on the master, activate both lanes, set the throttle position to 51%-60%, activate one fuel pump, wait for 42psi, hit start.

My new procedure is to first SET THROTTLE TO IDLE, turn on the master, activate lanes, activate one fuel pump, wait for 42psi, SET THROTTLE TO 60%, hit start. This has not failed me once since I made this change.

I purchased a Bristell LSA back in May. The airplane and engine (Rotax 915is) had 480 hours. Always started very smoothly. Checklist procedure was, after lanes A and B on, check each fuel pump individually for 42psi then start on the main pump only with throttle at 40%.  Always perfect smooth starts until recently. Then, about two weeks ago, the starts became very rough for the first ten seconds. Subsequent starts were fine. I would really like to know WHAT HAS CHANGED!? Even if I find another procedure that works, I still want to know why I have to change it up to get a smooth start?   Here are a couple YouTube videos. You can see the number one EGT is slow to rise. ???

I have an e-mail in to Lockwood Tech support regarding this. I'll pass along any info they give.

If it's anything like the 912iS, there is a Start procedure in.the Rotax manual which calls for a specific throttle % when starting depending upon coolant temperature.  Some airplane manufacturers do not reference that chart at all which leads to rough starts.  As well, for the 912iS, you are to keep the starter engaged until seeing a specific RPM.

Check the 915iS manual for a similar section.
