Any thoughts or opinions on Savvy Analysis for a Rotax engine? (I have a 915iS, if it matters.)

    hi Mike

I do not know of anyone using this on a Rotax injected engine.  The BUDS system is part of the Rotax way of reading the output of the CANBUS wiring.  The biggest issue with it is you must have a decoder (dongle) to connect to read the ECU data.  There are complete log files you can read and the BUDS software to read the data is free, it is the hardware that you have to pay for.

It would appear this question might be better put to Savvy directly as there is no suggestion on their site that it works with Rotax.

    Cheers

Savvy says their system does work with Rotax 9-series. That's why I'm asking here, to see if any Rotax owners have experience with their service.

I also asked the question on the Rotax-Owner Facebook group. The admin there replied that they use Savvy on carbureted 912s all the time, but they don't think it would work well on the injected iS engines.

    From the Savy Site...
" ... Almost all digital engine monitors will record exhaust gas temperature and cylinder head temperature for each individual cylinder. More sophisticated monitors also record other engine parameters such as manifold pressure and fuel flow, and electrical and air data such as bus voltage and aircraft altitude. The data is stored in the device, can be downloaded to a computer, then uploaded to SavvyAnalysis.com for archiving, viewing, and analysis. ..."

    - - -

There is NO Savy monitoring hardware involved.
This appears to be a software program that analyzes the data you send to it.
It should work on any engine where you can download the operating data logs.
The program should not care what engine the data comes from.

It is looking at the same data that you are looking at.
I am not sure what the added value is. ???

The value is supposed to be that their AI / machine learning algorithms are supposed to be able to detect leading indicators of problems, like exhaust valve failure, before they happen. However, they would need to have a sufficient amount of data gathered from a sufficient number of 915’s in order to develop an effective algorithm. I would imagine they don’t have that at this point.

I have used Savvy for 6 years now on my 912iS.  I also have the dongle but almost never use it.

The Savvy site is so much easier and user friendly to review and save engine data.

Savvy does have a number of Rotax owners that store engine data but they don't offer the same services that they do for Continental and Lycoming engines.

You won't be able to get the AI engine data analysis.(yet).

Nonetheless, I find it far easier to use the stored data to monitor the engine data than BUDS.
