I have just unloaded a new TL Sparker fitted with a 916iS. The aircraft has been in a container for 3 months and there is oil accumulated in the turbo. I believe this can happen to the 916iS during long storage. Has anyone had this experience and how did you remove the oil.

Thanks, from John in Australia.

Can you share a photo showing the amount of oil in the turbo?

The check valve allowed engine oil to seep into the turbo. There is no way to clean it out other than by starting the engine; the oil will blow out through the exhaust system, and you can expect it to smoke for a while on the first startup.

Make sure the oil system, including the turbo, has been properly purged before the first start-up run.

This engine may be one that is affected by the SB on the check valve for the turbo.  Find the serial and verify if it has been updated.

See ASB-916 i-008iS Rotax ASB on this subject.

    Cheers

Well today we removed 55 mils/3 oz from the turbo on the new 916iS. A long plastic tube fed in from the intercooler side and sucked out with a syringe. Some had also leaked out onto the floor. I was not prepared to start the engine with that amount of engine oil in the turbo. During a long period of storage gravity will do the job.

    Cheers.
