How long shelf-life is acceptable for a mechanical fuelpump to a 912, before its 5 years active time will be reduced ?

The calendar time life is for age of a part, regardless of when it comes into service.  Technically that would be from date of manufacture.  Fuel pumps on the Rotax have a serial number and you could refer to that for a date.  The first 2 numbers generally are the year, there will be a dot or space to the next 4 numbers that will be the serial within that year.   If you have a new pump on the shelf for example with 13.1234 as a serial then it is already over 10 years old.  Even if it is new it cannot be installed on a certified engine.  If you are flying an experimental you can use it but you also assume any risk..

    Cheers

How can this work in practise - the fuel pump is most likly to be replaced at 5 years, from the date of installation , not date of manufacture, as you suggest.

If the above practise is not "legal",  when I purchase a "new" pump, the cost should reflect the calendar time remaining on it  ie less cost for reduced time remaining ????😈

Service letter SL-912-022 (attached) separates shelf life from service life in paragraph 3.1.2.  Paragraph 3.1.3 defines the shelf life of rubber parts as 48 months, and it’s my understanding that would be separate from the 5 year service life.  So going by this, the pump could be on the shelf for 48 months if stored in the correct conditions, then installed and used for 5 years.  I’m willing to be wrong, but that’s how I read it.

    Hi Jeff,

With reference to RW's statement ( above)

I don't dispute your logic, which in a sort of way is what I assume happens in real life (5 years from installation) however thats not my understanding of RW's statement.

"If you have a new pump on the shelf for example with 13.1234 as a serial then it is already over 10 years old.  Even if it is new it cannot be installed on a certified engine" 😈

    Sean,

I agree, this is different than RW’s assertion if my interpretation is correct.
