Hi there,

I am building a Kitfox SS7 with a Rotax 912 iS and am considering taking a training class. My goal is to do my own basic maintenance and perform my own annuals and inspections. I am fairly mechanical, but I want to be sure I am doing things correctly rather than approaching this as a typical garage or hobby mechanic.

My current plan is to take the iRMT 9 Series Service course, which includes the Rotax Familiarization course, as a first step.

Is this course a good place to start? Is there a specific training vendor you would recommend? I would prefer something in the western US, but I am willing to travel, so location is not a deciding factor.

Thank you for your time and guidance.

I've heard great things about Lockwood in Sebring , FL, but not west coast.  Not cheap either.  I'd love to take it myself.

I took the courses in Vernon, BC so I can’t speak to US courses but the courses in general are great. If you can find one I’d advise to take it.  Well worth it no matter the cost.

I also took training in BC, and they were very good. Also, it is an incredibly beautiful spot.

    Steve,

The Rotax classes are a good learning experience and I recommend them, but they won’t license you to do your own annual inspection, even though you are the builder. As the builder you can do your own maintenance, but you will need at least the Repairman’s Certificate to do the annual inspection.  Rainbow Aviation offers a 16 hour course to earn this certificate, as well as longer courses (120 hours) to get a Light Sport Maintenance Rating.  The classes are fantastic.

    Hello Steve

I see by your profile you are in Idaho.  The training at Rotech Motor in Vernon British Columbia is near you, Motive Aero is in Utah, near the bottom close to St. George.

Given you are building then you can get the repairman ticket as an experimental amature built, with that you can do your annual, it will be specific to your N number.  My personal recommendation is that you take both the Service training and the Maintenance training.  What you get with the 2 additional days is shown how to remove and replace all the normal line items like gearbox, remove heads, cylinders and pistons.  Learn what the special tools are that you will use for those tasks.  This way if the occasion came up and you had a head or cylinder that needed repair you can remove it and have it sent out, replace it on return with some confidence that the job is right.

Just my opinion.  Note that from where you live it is about 600 miles to Vernon or the same distance to Motive in south Utah. (entrance to Zion national park.)

    Cheers
