checking oil level

    My understanding of the oil system in the 912/914 is that the oil is pushed out of the bottom sump by crankcase pressure induced by blowby past the rings. On my 912 (350 hours 3 blade prop) I hold the prop on the top on the compression peak so as to get more blowby, it seldom takes more than 8-10 revolutions to burp.

    Burp the engine right after you run the engine and the burp will take a few turns, no matter the viscosity or ambient temp.

    Thanks to all who have responded on this topic . My oil tank is high on the firewall on an Esqual . It would be good if those of us who have the problem could prevent it occurring, ie. the oil should stay where it is required. Perhaps Rotax should address the problem as friends can be well over the horizon whilst I and others are still "trying for a gurgle ". It can be a little embarrassing at times.

    Hi Robert,

    If you rotate the prop and it rotates without any problems and the oil level is up then I wouldn't worry about just hearing the gurgle.

    Thanks Roger . Usually there is no oil showing on the dipstick between flights so I have to pull it over quite a bit to get some oil up to be certain of having sufficient prior to starting.
