For years automobile manufactures that use aluminum engines have recommended using conditioners in the engine coolant system to prevent leaks and lubricate the water pump as well as prevent corrosion. Bar's company makes a leak and conditioner for aluminum engines that sound like it would be benificial to use in our aluminum engines. My wifes car specifically recommends using Bar's leak in her aluminun engine.

My question is why not use this same treatment in our Rotax aluminum engines if it will help prevent leaks and corrosion?

Has anyone seen anything from Rotax regarding using a leak and corrosion additive.

Thanks,
Dick

    Hi Dick,
No, Rotax does not recommend any additives for the coolant. For now the only additive recognized by Rotax is TCP for avgas use. All the recommendations for oil, coolant and fuel can be found in SI-912-016.
Dex Cool and other modern/premium coolant are designed for aluminum engines and we have had no problem with them. You just need to be careful you are purchasing the “good stuff”; some companies have coloured low quality coolant orange so you think you are getting premium coolant. In North America make sure it says “long life” or “Dex cool” on the package (better yet; follow SI-912-016 recommendations)
The problem we see is with the old style coolants that have silicates and other abrasives in them that damage the ceramic seal and pump shaft. Another major problem we see is with hard (tap) water use; the water system parts corrode and you get a build up of minerals.
