Where is the best place to get the paste for the plug threads on the 912? When I called Aircraft Spruce the parts person never heard of it. Then I found the Rotax part number and they wanted $ 150.00 for the bottle.

    Tim,

    I get mine at radio shack. It is the same stuff that is used as heat sink grease in electronic equipment. It is $3.95 a tube and is enough for two or three plug changes.

    Why on earth does anyone bother with it? :sick: Does anyone actually think that a tiny smear spread around one third of the threads of a plug is going to make the slightest difference? :dry:

    Actually John it does. Since things like plug threads are not zero tolerance the paste fills in the small gaps within the threads. The chemical compound helps heat between dis-similar metals equalize. If the threads were a zero tolerance you wouldn't need a compression ring to keep them from leaking.
    The second help for the plug threads is it will lubricate them and help reduce the chance of galling from combustion particles that can and do enter the threads upon removal and insertion. The spark plug torque is based on a wet torque and compression ring compression and without any paste that changes.

    Factory testing shows that the Wacker P12 paste reduces the spark plug temp by 10C. I would not use the Radio shack stuff on an aircraft. We only use what Rotax recommends on such a critical component. We sell it in small containers as only a tiny amount is needed over the life of an engine.
