"Providing you have properly sized inlet ram air openings and more importantly outlet openings"

Your sentence here says it all.

The top of the engine area is the warmest point and the #3-#4 exhaust are right under the air intakes for an air filter mount on the carb.
heat stays in quite a bit and that's most likely why Vans has a very high incident rate of VR failures because of their location under the cowl and that's why they approved a relocation to inside the cockpit.
Open air engines tend to run too cool and dump a lot of heat due to no cowling, but there are many that run hotter and can overheat with a cowl at 100 mph.

Your sentence still says it all. Each plane is different.

Not so much as a matter of the air heating up, but not as much air moving through as you may think. Cowls and their openings play a huge part here. Baffling that people put in usually doesn't direct the airflow many times where they think and sometimes actual hinder the flow. The only way to know this is a smoke flow test.

    Hi guys,
I was curious myself what the temp difference actually was on my C42A (80hp). So I installed an arduino temp logger to messure outside temp with one sensor and the temp of the air flowing through the filter fitted right at the carb.
During normal flight the temp difference floats around 5 Celsius. Whole crusing it never reached a double digit level.
Only after long full throttle steep climbs temp difference got to 15 to 17 Celsius.
Of course this is only true data for this particular installation and Cowling but it proves the point that "it's less than one would think".
If dashing about with absolute max rev and power was "the standard to look at" we would loose approx 8% of power. Or we'd be able to save about 1,5 l of gas per hour, theoretically speaking.
Practically I didn't care enough to change anything.
    Regards
    Peter
