Gents;

Some time ago I wrote saying that my oil temperature on my 912 ULS would rise to 240+ deg during an exerted climb in Hawaii, and that I did not like this.

Some of your replied that this was not unusual, especially during the summer ( I live in summer for 12 months in Hawaii :O)

I asked whether or not some of you had purchased and installed the "new" oil cooler ( specifically on a CTLS 2007, like mine ). And, if so, whether or not it produced a significant oil temperature drop as predicted.

Anyway, I purchased the latest one; removed the oil cooler & radiator ( they were welded together--ugh ); asked California Power Systems & Flight Design USA about the installation ( they were not very helpful... ); had the old oil cooler detached from the radiator, and professionally welded the new one back on the old radiator. I have by now flown it several times.

So, what happened?

My oil temperature dropped about 15 deg F, and today ( again ) would not even move into the yellow on a 650+ fpm climb to 4,000 feet. On cruise at 4,000 ft, at 5200 rpm, the temp averaged about 210F.

Perfect...So; those of you with temperature concerns might consider this !

    My oil temp is between 100 & 110 degC in the cruise when the ambient temp is only about 20 degC. I think that I might need more cooling if I went to mainland Europe in the summer.

    Can I ask, what are the relative dimensions of the two oil coolers that you used?

    Hi Kevin,

    Those temps you have are perfectly normal. Mine are the same.

    Roger, does that then mean that if I flew off to sunny Spain in August where it is about 40degC then I would be looking at about 120-130degC in the cruise? Would that be acceptable for the engine? Even if it is I'm not sure that the 40C would be any good for me!

    The dimensions are the same. I used the same bracket, screws, rubber dampers, etc.

    As I recall there are equal channels on both, too, but we noticed that the cooling fins are slightly farther apart, and this apparently enhances heat transfer.

    Hi kevin,

    I live in Tucson Arizona in the US southwest. Our normal May-September temps are 36c to 45c. I have no issues and neither do others. Prop pitch plays a big part here too. Too much pitch and your temps will climb. Strive to get 5600-5650 rpm at WOT in flat flight if you have a ground adjustable prop. If you have an in flight adjustable prop make sure you don't over pitch it for cruise either. You may see 115c in climb and maybe a few degrees warmer, but it should go back to between 100c-105c in normal cruise.

    p.s.
    Boy is it hard to speak metric. :lol: :lol:
