I would like some input on this oil thermostat:

Here is the Rotax 912 frequently ask questions about this thermostat from the Thermostasis website. They make 2 models. One for 190F and the other for 205F. Seems like the 205F would be better. I do not have any personal experience with these, but from the reading it seems okay, but bottom line is you would be experimenting. I have seen a few planes with these and it didn't seem like they had any issues. The PermaCool thermostat set at 180F really doesn't quite get you where you want to be.

Thanks Roger, I'm going to give the 205 model a try, after reading about the Permacool I really didn't want to go there, lot of unhappy users out there, some are happy but their in the 2% with some of them running tape on the cooler,,,,that's just not right IMHO.

    Ted:
I'm the designer of this oil thermostat. I'd be happy to answer your questions. You should know that Aircraft Spruce is currently selling the 190F unit only.

    Hi Mike,

I love simplicity and my hat is off to you. I do have a question, what effect on changing oil will this unit cause, at temps under the designed opening temp it is closed trapping a unknown amount of oil in the engine, am I missing something?

I believe it was Einstein that said: "everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler."
The oil thermostat really doesn't trap any oil. The oil thermostat does not create any restriction to oil flow. The only small effect is that you may have a longer total length of oil hose so that a small additional amount of oil remains in the oil hoses when the oil is changed. Remember that a 912 oil change consists of draining and refilling the oil tank only.
