Have you ever wanted to static balance your prop to help protect your gearbox from vibration? Have you ever wanted to balance a new set of tires? Here are a few simple tools to balance and set the prop pitch on your Rotax engine to help keep it healthy.

This wheel balancer does a great job on static prop balance and wheels. It has very sensitive high quality bearings. The model to get is the 15" axle shaft and the DU42 adapters.

Then here are two simple levels to use for that prop pitch fine tuning. It is a prop protractor and a digital 12" level. With these two tools you can easily get down to .25 degree pitch adjustments.

Looks a nice bit of kit Roger...I wonder what it sits on,

I was going to but a prop balancer localy over here in the UK next week...its the type with an alloy tube thats a snug fit in the prop hub...and its about 6-8" long...there is a sliding slug inside the tube that sits around the C/G of the prop and the whole lot hangs from a beam....priced at about $40,

I wonder if the one in your link is any more accurate...I would like to get a dynamic balance kit but at $1000...its a bit pricey.

    Hi Nick,

The static balancer in my post is very sensitive. I have to shut the hangar doors or go in the office so a breeze won't affect the prop. The bearings a very good quality. It cost about $115. My dynamic balancer from Aces was $4000. They are pricey aren't they. I really like my static balancer for both props and wheels. I balance all wheels no matter what the Mfg says. They are all out of balance.

There is a company here in the UK that make a range of equipment for the home builder inc a dynamic balance set-up...around $1000,

http://www.smartavionics.com/prod-pb.html with the PB-3 being the latest,

As you have used both static and dynamic Roger...will the dynamic equipment always be more accurate I wonder or is that down to how careful you are with the static gear.

    Hi Nick,

You need to do both types of balancing. The static always needs to be done before a dynamic balance. The static gets your balance for the prop only. When I do a static I do the entire hub assembly bolts and all. Then you should do a dynamic balance as that does everything attached to the plane and at rpm. It is the best way.
