    Overhaul manuals are distributor level only. There is a spec for the fretting and is a maint. check item. Is your value on your check over what the manual says is max?


    Yes, it's over the the max.

    I understand the Rotax doesn't share this information with anyone but the distributors but I'm sure I can figure it out by measuring the clearance at different torque settings. I would be more than glad to let them fix it if I wasn't being charged for something that was a Rotax flaw to begin with.

    Check with your distributor and see if they feel you may get some help from Rotax and fill out a CSIR (customer service information report)

    Hello Barry

    Sorry to hear you have suffered from the same fate as many others on this forum. All of the torque specs are shown on the Illustrated Parts Catalogue. I found this out eventually when we rebuilt our engine. This wasn't the place I was expecting to find such details but this is where they are ... and of course in the secret overhaul manuals.

    I understand that Rotax is trying to protect themselves by not recommending everyone work on their engines, hence making it difficult to get information around parts and specs. But these motors are very simple to work on, there is nothing technically advanced or scary about opening up a 912/912S, provided you have some prior combustion engine assembly experience. Its a shame Rotax will not provide any assistance with this issue as there clearly seems to be a faulty batch of crankcases, not to mention the high repair cost from a authorised service center.

    To be honest I wouldn't even bother logging a CSIR form as if you are like me you will not even receive an acknowledgement of your request.

    I hope you get your crankcase sorted.

    Hi Jonathan,

    There is more than one reason to fill out a CSIR. Here are a few:
    Warranty claim,
    Document issues of the same nature from around the world otherwise Rotax will never know if you are silent,
    documentation for SB's, SA's, re-calls, ect... for the fleet
    documentation for any court case,
    Documentation to help protect you from a libel case from a passenger or by-standers


    Not filing a CSIR serves no one any where and especially the owner.

    It only takes a few minutes and helps you, the other world owners, Rotax, mechanics and the list goes on.

    Documentation is extremely important when owning an aircraft because of all the associated liability in all the owner aspects.

    Thanks Jonathan. I'll look there. I have talked to two distributors and they agree with you that it's a waste of time to talk to Rotax. They said that they overwhelm them with paperwork and process that make it so painful to make a claim that it isn't even worth it.

    I have experience building race engines so I'm not concerned about trying this. Thanks for the encouragement.

    I will go ahead and fill out a CSIR but don't expect a response. I think they are great little engines and hope they survive for a long time. The support from the distributors has been good but their hands have been tied.
