Hello all,

I dont know if you have heard of this problem before, this is something that seems to be happening to many 912 ULS rotax engines in different airfields here.

The problem is as follows, cold starts are impossible, the propeller rotates but there is no signal of ignition, you can try forever without response. Then take a hot air gun and heat the ignition modules for 3 or 4 minutes, try again and the engine starts like a charm. As I said before I know of a good number of engines showing this behavior. Any clue?

Thanks.

    Hi Alberto,

I won't say an ignition module never ever goes bad, but it is fairly rare. Most hard starting issues can be traced back to either poor carb sync, old carbs that may need a rebuild, choke adjustment, throttle setup and or usage during a start, old plugs or the wrong gap, low battery voltage too small a wire for the battery starter system. Each one of these needs to be ruled out because it most likely isn't the ignition module. Heating it up after a start try may be very misleading because you tried once and then let the engine sit. That alone will affect the next start attempt. heating it should have no real value. They are electronics inside and not relays or sticky parts.

Unless the heat is curing a connection problem?

Excuse me Roger, but looks like you didn't read my message. It is not just a start try and then let the engine sit, I said that you can try forever without response, in fact you can spend the whole day trying, waiting, trying, waiting,... all you get is a complete unresponsive engine. We didnt found the heating solution by ourselves, we heard of it in a spanish forum, from some people having the very same issue. Simply apply heat to the ignition modules for 3-4 minutes and the engine comes alive at the first attempt.

    Thanks.

You should contact your Rotax service provider if you have this problem. They will want to test the module and if it does not pass the bench test Rotax has replaced them under warranty.

We would like, but this engine is five years old and is out of warranty. Rotax just say to change both modules.
