I flew yesterday and noticed the EGT on my right bank was higher than the left bank. It seemed to wander around at different throttle settings. I have a Grand Rapids Tech EIS and monitor both banks.
I checked the obvious, nothing in the carb bowls, removed the carb tops thinking maybe the rubber diaphragm may be bad allowing the needle to move around some. It appeared to be supple with no holes or splits. The slide had oil on center section and moves freely up and down,(should this be oily or dry). The EGT sensors for both sides read the same with the engine off, so I believe they are correct.
I can't see anything obvious that would cause this, the engine has 800 hours,
Anyone got any good ideas

    Dale,

One trick that almost always cures the EGT problem is to unplug and replug all the spade connectors between the EIS and the EGT probes. The current flow from the probes is so small that even a tiny bit of corrosion in the spades can make the readings go crazy.

    Hi Dale,

I agree with Bill. Clean the connectors and make sure all connections are tight. The EGT fluctuations are usually from bad connections. If you allow header wrap to over wrap or go under and EGT probe it will fluctuate 100+F (if you have the wormdrive clamp type). If any one uses header wrap (I do) then just keep it back off the EGT mount a little.

looking it over again today, the left carburetor, although the slide had some oil residue on it, it was still kinda sticky and did not seem to move up or down as easily as the right side. Does the slide need a light oil or a grease on it to be able to go up and down easily. This could be why the temps are not consistent if the slide is sticking or has a couple of hard places in its travel. The manuals do not indicate what if any lubrication is needed on the needle slide for smooth movement.

    Hi Dale,

There is no lubing. That collects dirt.It should be cleaned and put back in. If it has a build up on the slide that can affect its operation.

Thanks Roger, I also use header wrapping, but on the Nr.1 cylinder the wrapping came of where the EGT sensor is mounted when replacing a faulty sensor. I have ever since wondered why the Nr.1 cyl runs 50-70C° higher than the other 3 with all are within +/- 20c° Will re-wrapp this pipe.
