I rapped my exhaust pipes a few months ago with heat wrap on my 912 UL engine. On my last flight I got a nasty crack in one of the pipes just as it comes out of the cylinder. Can the increased heat in the pipe make the metal more brittle and be prone to cracking. I have 800+hrs on the engine. It runs smooth and strong and the temps are well within the temp parameters. Anyone had the same problem with cracking and what are your thoughts about wrapping pipes?

    Hi Andy,

I have wrapped many an exhaust and none have ever broken. If you had an already weak spot this may have finished it off.
Over wrapping will cause excessive heat which can cause issues. You should never over wrap the edges by more than 3/8". I also use 2" wrap to prevent over wrapping of the 1" header wrap.

How did you wrap yours and what width cloth did you use?
I hope you used cloth and not some other material.

Thanks Roger for your respons. I used 2" vide weaved cloth with an over-wrap of 1/4" - 3/8". The pipe cracked just at the edge of the wrap and at the edge of the weld, just before the 90° elbow that goes down to the muffler. Maybe 12 years and 800 hrs also could have something to do with it. Fatigue.

Breaking at a weld is more common than other places. It may not have been properly stress relived. Of course 800 hrs. has most likely added to the problem. I have seen them crack with a lot less hours.
