Dear Rotax owner,

After about 500 hours my engine, 912S, starts to show increased oil pressure readings.
Until now it has been very stable at 3.7 bar (54 PSI) for many years (7).
It start to show 4.0-4.6 bar (58-67) and it changes its value frequently.

My main candidate for this behaviour is the sender. I will in any case buy a new sender due the amount of hours.

My question is: can it be other, more serious, reason behind this behaviour that needs to be checked ?

Thanks in advanced
Stephan

    Hi Stephan,
Check your oil pressure relief spring; it may have worn and the wear creates sharp edges that catch on the inside of the bore. The new pressure relief plug screw reduces the chance of this as it is taller and has a teflon coating.

Thanks Rob. Will do that. I remember that I replaced the spring after only one year in service.
The problem was too low pressure. New spring (and maybe one shim. Cannot remember)
gave me the 3.7 bar pressure.

You should really put a mechanical gauge inline to check the real pressure. Many just put shims in when the real pressure was fine, but showed low on their instrument panel. You really need to determine if this reading is real or or what the culprit is. Is it a real pressure problem, a sender problem, a grounding issue or an instrument issue.

Try not to make changes in the blind. A mechanical gauge is a cheap and easy way to diagnose an issue.

    Thanks Roger,

I will absolute do that after I have replaced the spring and ball/cone and the sender.
It feels correct to replace these part first. No chims before checking against mechanical
    gauge.

Replacing the old oil pressure plug screw, spring and ball bearing with the new parts is a good idea and a good place to start. It only takes a few minutes to swap parts then safety wire it in place. Hopefully that will take care of your problem altogether.
