I am in Hawaii--flying a 2008 Flight Design CTLS, and when leaving Kona for Honolulu, or vice versa, my oil temperature always seems to rise to the warning level of 240F during a climb ( of say 650+/- ft / min ) by the time I get to say, just 3000 ft.

I am "forced" to level off, the speed increases to say 115+ knots, and after a couple of minutes, it slowly drops to 225F+/- . Then I resume the climb to cruise altitude, another few thousand feet. Occasionally I have to do this twice. At cruise the temp gauge fluctuates a bit, but indicates about 220F+/-.

I seem to recall that Rotax announced a replacement Oil Cooler, which runs the oil temp about 10 deg cooler. If so, I think I would want to get it, and replace the standard oil cooler.

Does anyone have information or advice on this?

The newer CTLS use a Setrab oil cooler that is larger than the Rotax oil cooler and is also very good quality.
I am not sure if a 2008 has the Setrab already, or if not, if you can upgrade , Roger will know.

    Hi Scott,

I too have a CT and I'm a service center for them. Your temps are normal for climb in your OAT region. If all you get to is 240F then don't worry. This is still in the yellow. Yellow just means look at me and keep an eye on me so I don't see red. This time of year cruise oil temps are 215F-225F depending on where you live, altitude cruise and throttle settings.

You can swap to the newer oil cooler and it should fit. Someone in California is doing it right now. You will have to separate your existing setup. Unless we can get a fleet wide LOA from FD you'll have to get a separate one.

Call Tom P. in Connecticut at FD USA for a better answer.

    Hi Rob,

Unless the new 2015-2016 912iS CT's have these I know older models don't have them. Does the 912iS have the new cooler?

Hi Roger, yes, the CT with the 912iS has a setrab, I thought i saw that all the newer CT's had them at OSH last year...

Last year they probably did. If they did then getting an LOA for a new install should be easy.
