Can you help me understand how to use band-it clamps on fire sleeve? (And tell me if all associated band-it tools are very expensive – or is there an alternative tool and clamp?)

Perhaps the previous owner of my engine had the same confusion and that is why he put the fires sleeve over the hardware-store hose screw clamps and then used safety wire (which you said not to do, and I will not duplicate/do).

When I read Rotax 5 Year Rubber Replacement; The Installation Considerations (Part 2), it says it is preferred to terminate oil and fuel lines with Oetiker-style band clamps or fuel injection clamps, which I now have in hand. The pictures of the fire sleeve do not show any clamp under the fire sleeve, but they may be just out of frame.

Again, does the Band-it clamp over the fire sleeve serve as the only clamp on the fuel lines and oil lines? Is this in place of the Oetiker clamp? Or is the Oetiker (or other style) clamp under the fire sleeve to secure the hose to the termination; and then the band-it clamp is over top of the fire sleeve just to seal the fire sleeve (along with the other sealants – I have both red silicone sealant and fire sleeve tape in hand to finish it off)?

Thanks,
Dennis

    Hi Dennis,
Use the Oetiker one ear clamps and fuel injection clamps on the fuel and oil hoses. Make sure you use something very sharp like a scalpel to cut hose and don't use a serrated blade. It will leave little floaters that get sheared off when you slide the hose over a metal fitting. Blow out all fuel and oil hose with air after you have pushed them through the fire sleeve and before you install it. Use a Band-It clamp on the fire sleeve up towards the end. Do not over clamp the Band-It clamp. If it isn't located directly over a metal fitting in the hose it has enough squeeze to start closing off the underlying hose and restrict flow. I use a Band-It Jr. clamp tool. There are others and prices may range from $30-$90. You can buy these on Amazon and you can buy the Band-It clamps there too. I usually buy them in a box of 100. You can buy Oetiker one ear clamps there too.
