Hi guys, I guess I can do with some advice.
Over the past weeks we have experience higher oil and water temps than usual in our 1200 hours Rotax 912 (runs nicely). We invested some time to improve airflow through the oil cooler and won approx. 10 degrees.
However, over the past hours the temps seem to be coming back up. We had hints from fellow pilots that the sound has changed so we started to think that the muffler has developed some internal defect which causes the temps to rise. We are going to check upon that somehow.
Now more questions have come up like does the water pump work as it should and does the oil pump work on the lneccessary level? If one of both or both were "poor" that would explain rising temps, too, right?
The question now is, is there a simple and efficient way to check the pumps' performance?
Thans for hints and comments.

What do you consider high temps? Since these temps have been climbing what has been the OAT? Your pumps are most likely fine. Start with easy to check simple diagnostics. It is rarely some exotic problem.
With 1200 hours you may want to flush the oil cooler. Do it in reverse flow. Has any other maint. been done since this started happening?

    Hi Roger,
OAT was about 20C, nothing special. We consider a temp spread between OAT and oil of 80C to 90C as normal. Since the airflow was improved. But the difference rose by 10 to 15C recently.
Recent maintannce was new oil, new filter, new plugs. Cooling liquids are OK from my point of view. Also, no leaks or anything like it.
Is flushing the oil cooler being conducted with a special liquid or is it just forcing oil through the cooles reversely?
Do you believe that water and oil pump may not be an issue, generally speaking?

20c is 68F and that should have you running nice and cool. Are you using a 50/50 mix coolant? What are the actual oil and or coolant temps?
I have seen people send oil coolers in for a hot liquid flush and sonic vibration.
I see others just use a solvent and fill the cooler and blow back through it in reverse flow. You could probably just use the solvent and blow it out with some high pressure air and see if anything comes out at all. Do it 2-3 times. It may at least rule the cooler in or out as a culprit.

Was your new oil Aero Shell Sport Plus 4 and new filter a Rotax filter? Were the plugs NGK DCPR8E?

We usually saw oil temps in the range of 100C to 110C, rarely more. Recently oil rose up to 120C with a clear tendency towards short appearances of 130C. The general increase is my concern.
50/50, oil and filter: all yes!
Spark plugs are DCPR7E, not the "8"-version which is supposed to fit the 100 horses engine only, I believe.
No thermostat on board. 4 EGTs typically between 760C and 780C.

Roger, you referred to "solvent". Do you have a particular product in mind (I mean by function, not necessarily a brand)?
Ruling out the oil cooler may be the right next step indeed. Any more ideas or trouble shoots?
    Regards

    Sorry I thought you had a 912ULS.
120c (248F) is climbing on up there. What is your wide open throttle (WOT) rpm in level flight? If it is below 5500 rpm then you're over pitched and that will cause more heat. Just use some laquer thinner or something similar to do the first flush just to see if anything comes out at all. Flush it 2-3 times well. Do it over a white or light colored rag to see if anything comes out.
