Hi Guys,

I am just wondering what your experience is with the plug colour ing across the 4 cylinders on a 912 UL 2007.

This is on a Microlight and has spend some time (circa 18 mths) being mostly ground run and at lower RPM without much by way of full flying conditions.

The plugs in the two rear cylinders (1,2) are very black and sooty (not oily or wet) and the plugs in the two front cylinders (3,4) are fairly light brown in colour (what I would think is close to normal)

Just wondering what your experiences are with this and why the difference between the two rear and front?

    Hi Craig,
First there is way too much thermal paste on those plugs and too close to the tip.
    Watch this video:
    http://www.rotax-owner.com/en/videos-topmenu/rotax-minute/399-2-oil-inj247

Clean the plug threads off and my guess is there is enough in the plug holes to still do the job. Are the plug gaps between .023 - .027 gap?
The plug color may be normal since this is only from ground low rpm runs. If you want to see how it is really running go fly at the higher rpms and then immediately upon landing shut it down. No long taxi times at low rpm. If you want do your ground run for 5 minutes at approximately 4000 rpm and let that soot burn off then take a look.

    Hi Roger,

Thanks for the reply. Yes the plugs were fitted by the previous owner and before replacing them I did remove some of the paste although from what you say I could probably remove more.

The plugs gaps were at the top end of the .023-.027 limit so have been now been adjusted slightly although it has not been checked since.

Thanks for the pointers I'll check what you have mentioned when I go down next.
